FAQ's About Remote Controls and Conversions

We have compiled several pages of frequently asked questions about fireplace safety, maintenance and cleaning.

Does the term “remote ready” mean that the unit comes with a remote control?
There are up to 20 different kinds of remotes available to you. Remote ready units do not come with one of these remotes. What remote ready means is that these units have a millivolt valve that creates millionths of volts of electricity to control the valve. This allows you to turn the unit on and off through the use of either a wired or wireless remote.

Is it possible to connect my thermostat or wired wall switch with variable high-lo logs or fireplace?
Unfortunately, you will need to use the remote control that was specifically designed for variable high-lo logs or fireplaces.

Can you define high-lo valve?
This allows you to raise and lower the height of the flame through the remote control. You can adjust the remote control to be either thermostatically controlled or to function as an on/off.

Is it a good idea to purchase a remote ready vented log set?
This is not a good idea as it would require you to leave the damper open completely, allowing 60 cents of every heating dollar spent to simply escape through the vent. This also means that the damper would need to be opened each time you turn it on. In this case, it is just as convenient to turn it on while opening the damper, taking away any advantage of a remote.

Is it a good idea to purchase remote ready with vent free gas logs?
This is a great idea. To help you both turn the unit on and off and keep the room temperature at a comfortable level, it is best to purchase a unit that has a thermostatically controlled remote. A unit that allows you to adjust the height of the flame will give you the best results, and long term value.
