Old or Damaged
Chimney Caps can Cause Water Leaks
This article will help
you become familiar with the causes of water
damage that are easy for you to detect yourself.
This will help you to prevent water damage to
your home.
Rainwater
You need proper drainage in place to keep
rainwater from collecting along the foundations
of your home or beneath your floors during rainy
season.
Gutters and Drains
Gutters need to be regularly cleaned to prevent
rainwater from getting pushed under your
shingles or traveling down the inside of your
homes walls. A lack of proper drains can cause
your gutters to overflow. Be sure that the water
from your gutters and drains is emptied away
from your homes foundation. This will help
prevent damage to your foundation and a flooded
basement.
Windows and Doors
Windows and doors that have been incorrectly
installed can cause water to penetrate into your
walls. You can also get moisture penetration
during windy conditions if the seals around
windows and doors are damaged in any way.
Leaking Roofs
You can get damage to the roof deck, especially
around chimneys and vents, when old roofing
materials allow water to penetrate. Shingles
that are either cracked or curling will allow
for moisture intrusion. You can get water in the
interior parts of your chimney if you have a
damaged chimney cap. It is especially dangerous
to have a flat roof drain that has clogged. This
can lead to water remaining on the roof, causing
leaks or at the very worst the entire collapse
of the roof under the weight of the water.
Attics
At attic that is improperly insulated will allow
extra heat to escape from your home. This will
melt any rooftop snow, creating an ice dam
overnight. These ice dams allow moisture to
penetrate under roof shingles, allowing water to
drip into your walls or attic space.
