Chimney Liners

Dangerous conditions can be created by an old chimney that has not been properly maintained.

Fire or hazardous gases can enter your home through cracked tiles or deteriorating masonry in your fireplace. There are two main ways that you can fix this problem. You can either completely remove the old chimney and build a new one in its place, or you can install an aluminum or stainless steel chimney liner. It is very difficult to remove an old chimney, often requiring lots of skilled labor and money. Chimneys that are in the middle of a home can often be almost impossible to remove. A metal chimney liner is usually the most cost effective way to repair a chimney.

Rigid pipe is not always the best material to use for a chimney liner, as most chimneys have jogs or offsets as they rise from bottom to top. Flexible chimney liners are available to use for chimneys that are not straight. There are two types of flexible liners. A heavy flexible liner is traditionally constructed using 316L stainless steel. This liner really lives up to its name. The most common type of liner is a light flexible stainless steel liner. This are usually constructed using 316ti stainless steel. Efficient gas appliances usually use aluminum liners.

The “ti” in 316ti stands for titanium. While it is not essential to have titanium, it does provide added protection against corrosion and the high heat you will see in a fireplace. All flexible liners can withstand the extreme high temperatures that can be associated with a chimney fire. While many liners claim that they will last a lifetime, these products are so new there is no way to prove that. The good news is that they have passed under extensive tensing by Underwriter Laboratories and other testing agencies.
