Masonry Chimneys

When you are working with multiple flues it does not matter whether the flues are extended or not when it is time to order your chimney cap.

Single Flue Chimneys With Extended Flues
These are the most common form of chimneys. The flues of these chimneys extend out above the top of chimney, which makes installation of a chimney cap easier. The professional installer needs simply to screw the cap to the clay or ceramic flue. To ensure a good fit the outside dimensions, both the height and width, of the flue need to be measured. Flue caps come in a range of sizes, so you need your measurements in order to purchase one. The range that a particular cap will fit is also dependant on the length of the screws that will be used to fasten it to the flue.

Single Flue Chimneys Without Extended Flues
If your flue does not extend beyond the top of the chimney you will need a leg kit in order to install your chimney cap. The leg kit extends down into the flue and attaches to the sides. While leg kits allow for easy installation of chimney caps on flush chimneys, they will not stand up to high winds. If you live in a high wind area you will need to install your chimney cap with more secure brackets. You will need your chimney top measurements so you can determine which cap size is best for you. They usually fit a range of sizes. Some caps come with screws on the outside. Don’t worry; they will still work properly if you are mounting the cap inside the flue. You will need to measure both the height and width of the flue opening inside the chimney. You will then need to figure out which size range works best for your measurements. Do not forget to order either the brackets or leg kit that work with your cap.

Multi Flue Chimneys With Or Without Extended Flues
When you are working with multiple flues it does not matter whether the flues are extended or not when it is time to order your chimney cap. Your first step is to measure the total exterior width and length of all the flues combined, as well as the height of the tallest extension from the chimney. The flue you choose will need to not only cover the height of the tallest flue with the lid, but also fit inside your chimney. As you will be mounting this cap directly to the chimney crown it is very important to take the screen height into account. To ensure proper drafting you need to have at least 5” of clearance between the top of the cap and the top of the flue. If, for example, your highest flue sticks up 3” you will need to have a screen height of no less than 8” to have a 5” gap.
