Requirements for Chimney Caps
Some areas, such as California,
require a 5/8" mesh for the screened portion of
the chimney cap.
There are also regulations in many parts of the
country, especially in California, that require
a 1/2" spark arrestor. This is primarily true is
wooded areas, or areas that are adjacent to
wooded areas. The industry standard for
California regulation chimney caps are caps with
a 5/8” mesh, as these will not allow a ½” spark
to escape according to the National Fire
Protection Association. Be sure to check the
local codes in your area to see what type of
special mesh may be required.
