A Few Tips for
Getting the Best Fire
One idea is to use a
commercial fire starter or fatwood instead of
pine for kindling.
Only use soft wood to help
get your fire started. Burning a soft wood, such
as pine, gives you a greater chance of a chimney
fire by quickly building up creosote in your
chimney. One idea is to use a commercial fire
starter or fatwood instead of pine for kindling.
Hardwood is your best bet for firewood. Examples
of hardwood are hickory, maple, oak, and cherry.
It should be split into pieces about 4 inches on
each side. The best firewood has been dried for
at least one year. (You can get more tips in our
article devoted to picking the right firewood).
Plastics and papers containing colored ink may
release toxins when burned and should not be
used in your fireplace. This includes things
such as magazines, the Sunday funnies or gift
wrapping. It is never a good idea to place
flammable liquids in your fireplace.
