What Type of Chimney Cap Do You Need

It is now time to determine what type of chimney cap you need.

See if your flue sticks out above your chimney crown, the concrete that surrounds the flue at the top of the chimney. If it does, and your flue is either square or a small rectangle, you can purchase a chimney cap that will be attached to the outside of your flue using screws. The entire chimney will be covered by the outside mounting chimney cap. These types of covers will usually need to be custom made to meet the particular measurements of your chimney.

A top mount chimney cap will be necessary if your flue sticks up less than an inch above the chimney crown. Installation of top mount chimney caps is usually done with screws that attached through a flange on the chimney crown.

You have an option if you have more than one flue. If there is enough room between each flue you can cover each one of them individually. Most people, however, decide to cover all of the flues with a single top mount chimney cap.

To cover a round flue you will use either a round outside mount or a round inside mount chimney cap.
